Choosing Materials

Roofing for most people is an afterthought -- until it starts leaking. Then you start thinking about how critical your homes exterior really is. While your house keeps your house dry it also has to do its part in making your home look good, so when your building a new home, adding onto, or re-roofing, it may benefit you to consider the many roofing options. With advancing technology in roofing material there are more options than ever, so choosing one is a difficult process.

The choices range from asphalt shingles to wood shakes and clay tiles, from steel panels to rubber look alike. A trend that is making a mark is the engineered roofing material. This change is due to a few driving factors. Wood being so costly has made it an expensive cost/effective material. Also codes have been set in place to make roofing materials on homes all fireproof material. And many people want not only something that looks good but also last for years to come.

Asphalt Shingles

The roofing material you see on majority of Northern Virginia homes is the standard three-tab asphalt shingle. One of the least-expensive roofing options are asphalt shingles, since they come in dozens of different colors both solid and blended. Most distribution companies have a 20 to 30 year guarantee that makes them an excellent value for a homeowner. Value is the reason that it is commonly used for most homes and is a great advantage to picking asphalt shingles but that being said the only downside, if there could be one, is that it is in fact common.

The upgrade from a standard three-tab shingle is a thicker variation called dimensional shingles. These shingles are built up and consist of two layers one on top of another, with a staggered pattern to give them a heavier more substantial or "dimensional" look. Some colors can even make the roof look to be wood shakes or slate panels. With only a slight increase in cost and an upgraded 30 year warranty, dimensional shingles are an excellent value with an added touch of style.
